ROTARY BANGALORE EAST PACEMAKER BANK’S NEW YEAR’S GIFT |
Successful Pacemaker Surgery for 15 days old baby at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology
Pacemaker Implantation is done when Heart rate (Pulse rate) is below 35 beats/minute in adults with symptoms. Baby of Smt. Renuka was found to have extremely slow heart rate during last trimester of pregnancy by fetall Echocardiographic Study which was consistent with the diagnosis of congenital Complete Heart Block. Two of the earlier babies of Renuka has died, one at birth & another after 2 years who also had slow heart rate. According to Dr. C.N. Manjunath, Director of the Jayadeva Institute, in adults normal heart rate is 60-80 beats/minute, while in new born babies & infants, it is between 110-140/minute.
This female baby was diagnosed to have Congenital Complete Heart Block with a heart rate of 40 beats/min. These children are at risk of sudden death. Hence this female baby of Smt. Renuka was advised Emergency Pacemaker Implantation. The cost of the pacemaker and procedure will cost Rs. 1.30 Lakhs. But baby’s father is a daily wages worker did not have any money to bear this life saving device for his baby.
Rotary Bangalore East came forward and donated this special pacemaker for this young child and Pacemaker implantation was done successfully on 9/1/2008 by Dr. Devanand, Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. S. Jayaprakash, Electrophysiologist at 14 days after birth & the baby is doing well.
Normally pacemaker generator is kept beneath the chest wall below the collar bone, however since new born baby is very small, this instrument was placed in abdominal wall.
Dr. C.N. Manjunath, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology said this is first time in the State such a small & youngest baby has undergone Pacemaker implantation, The Institute has waived off operation charges. The Institute has entered an Memorandum of Understanding with Rotary Bangalore East & Heart Link International, USA for Pacemaker donations to needy poor patients.
Rotary Bangalore East has already donated 8 pacemakers to poor patients at this Institution.
The parents of the baby have complimented the noble gesture of Rotary Bangalore East’s Chairman, Rtn. V. Krishnamoorthy, Secretary, Sri. M. Subramaniam and Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology.
