Two children Master Kevin and Miss Angeline of Indonesia recently underwent successful Open Heart Surgery for birth defects in heart at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.
Master Kevin 5 years old boy from Medan, Indonesia, 1st child of Single parent Mrs. Heny who works as a maid servant in a local photography shop was advised Open Heart Surgery at Medan 2 months back, as her condition was deteriorating and needed repeated admissions because of heart defects (VSD).
10 year old girl Ms. Angeline adopted child of Akiong who make a living by selling cakes in Jakartha also required a Open Heart Surgery for correction of birth defects in heart (ASD).
It was impossible for them to undergo Surgery in Jakartha as the surgical cost would be around 5-7 lakhs (in Indian Rupees). Parents then contacted the local Rotarian at Indonesia for financial help. Rotary International District, Indonesia under a goodwill programme of Rotary International District 3190, Bangalore has decided to help these children for getting operated at Bangalore. The surgery was conducted successfully by the team headed by Dr Seetharama Bhat and others. Both children recovered and fit to be discharged.
According to Dr. C N Manjunath, Director, incidence of this type of heart hole is found in about 6 children for every 1000 babies born. There is mixing of pure with impure blood and excess blood flow to the lungs. The usual symptom of large heart hole is frequent episodes of cough, fever, pneumonia, growth retardation. Echocardiogram Investigation will always clinch the diagnosis and guide the treatment.
Rotary International District Bangalore and Jayadeva Institute has equally shared the cost.
The children had an uneventful recovery. The parents of Master Kevin and Miss Angeline were very happy and expressed gratitude for the hospital. They are also very much impressed by the facilities, hospitality and the concern of the hospital staff.
