Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Government run autonomous Institute has conducted the Biggest ever Angioplasty Workshop from 4th to 9th October 2010, wherein 175 poor patients underwent Angioplasty & Stenting Procedure. Stents were given free of cost to all these patients.
According to Dr. C N Manjunath, to perform 175 Angioplasties in just 6 days is technically demanding; it was possible because the Institute has got 4 Cathlabs, 35 full time Cardiologists and excellent technical and nursing staff.
The most expensive component of Angioplasty is Stent, each costing between Rs. 35,000 to Rs. One Lakh.
Dr. Govindaraju Subramani Heart Foundation and Medtronic Vascular Division, California, USA have donated Stents, Balloons worth Rs. 1.5 Crores and another Rs. 50 Lakhs was contributed by the Hospital. It is a role model philanthropic work to many NRI doctors and organizations.
Most of patients are poor agriculturists, daily wage labourers, Autorickshaw Drivers, Foot path vendors, Garment workers and financially constrained Senior Citizens.
Dr. C N Manjunath, Director said Heart attack related diseases is steadily increasing even among poor people, rural areas and is occurring at younger ages. The youngest patient in this workshop was 25 years old labourer. 40% of the patients were below 50 years of age and half of them were diabetics. “Heart attack related disease is no more a disease of elderly people as it is catching bridegrooms.”
Institute and patients have immensely thanked Medtronic Vascular Division, USA for its generous contribution. Dr. Govindraju Subramani and Dr. Devaraj, Cardiologists from USA for their active participation.
His Excellency, the Governor Sri. H R Bhardwaj was the Chief Guest. Local MLA, Sri B N Vijaykumar was the Guest of Honor.
