Signs MoU with GBA to bring world-class, near-free cardiac care
Bengaluru, April 24 — In a significant step toward decentralizing cardiac healthcare, the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICS&R) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to establish a 100-bed Jayadeva satellite unit at Govindarajnagara in west Bengaluru — fulfilling a key promise from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's state budget.
The agreement was formalised between Jayadeva hospital director Dr. B. Dinesh and GBA chief commissioner N. Maheshwara Rao at Vikasa Soudha, in the presence of medical education & skill development minister Dr. Sharanprakash R. Patil, Govindarajnagar MLA Priya Krishna, additional chief secretary Mohammed Moshin, west Mahanagara Palike commissioner KV Rajendra and other senior officials.
"This is a great step towards taking cardiac care to the west of Bengaluru. The new unit to be housed within the GBA's existing multispecialty building at Govindarajnagara will serve residents of Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar, Yashwanthpur, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Dasarahalli, Peenya, and Bengaluru Rural, as well as patients from Ramanagara, Mandya, Tumkur, and Hassan districts all at no or minimal cost," said minister Dr. Patil.
This unit will cater to the health needs of a vast population that currently has to travel far for specialised heart treatment. The satellite facility is also expected to ease the patient burden at Jayadeva's main hospital in Jayanagar, south Bengaluru, which already runs satellite units in Kalaburagi and Mysuru.
The state government has allocated ₹15 crore as an immediate measure to set up the 100-bed unit. MLA Priya Krishna committed to ensuring that any civil and electrical modifications are funded through west Mahanagara Palike and to establishing a cathlab facility under CSR funds.
Looking ahead, Dr. Dinesh announced plans to extend the Jayadeva network across Bengaluru with units planned for central, north and east Bengaluru. A site for the north Bengaluru unit has already been identified and will be finalised in consultation with Byatarayanapura MLA and revenue minister Krishna Byregowda.
A Medical College for West Bengaluru Too
In a parallel development, minister Dr. Patil and MLA Priya Krishna directed west Mahanagara Palike commissioner to identify at least five acres of government land in the region to establish a new campus of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMC&RI), extending quality medical education and hospital beyond its current base on K.R. Road in south Bengaluru.
