For the first time in the country fourth generation stent in form of “Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold” was launched at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bangalore. This new generation stent was successfully implanted in 70yrs old male patient, who presented with symptoms of chest discomfort, Coronary angiogram revealed 90% blockage in Right Coronary artery (RCA). Dr. C.N.Manjunath, Director, SJICR, performed this procedure for the first time in the state using this new device.
According to Dr. C.N.Manjunath, normally stent is made of stainless steel metal, which remains in the body throughout life and a constant source of inflammation and clot formation and requires lifelong blood thinning medicines such as Aspirin, Clopidogrel, Prasugrel, which can cause Gastrointestinal bleeding and stroke.
This new dissolvable Absorb scaffold stent is made out of “Poly lactide” material with drug coating, which will remain in the body for 2 – 2 ½ years and gets totally dissolved, when artery becomes normal. The other advantage is that the artery will have normal physiological functions over period of time and there is also no need of blood thinning medicines for long years. Patient has recovered well and will be discharged in a day or two said Dr. C.N.Manjunath.
