NON-SURGICAL VALVE REPLACEMENT IN 17 YEARS OLD BOY AT JAYADEVA HOSPITAL, BANGALORE

Master Karthik 17 yearold boy - a resident of JP Nagar, Bangalore, whosefatherwas a painter by occupation passedaway 5 years back. Hismotherwhoworks as a cookisraisingKarthik and hissisterwhostudies in Std. X. This boy came to Jayadeva Hospital for the first time in 2012 and wassubjected to ECHO wherehewasfound to have infection on the right side of the heart(Tricuspid Valve) and the infection haddestroyed the valve leaflet. Aftergivinghimappropriatetreatment for infection (Endocarditis),hewastaken up for surgery and his valve wasrepaired.

One yearlater,he came back withleaking of the same valve. In 2017, thisleakwasaddressedsurgically by use of aGraftwhichisextractedfrom a Cadaver. Twoyearsafter the 2ndsurgery, the leakhadgraduallyworsened and wasagainsevere, whichneededrepair. During 2020 againhe came to us with the complaints of palpitations. On evaluationhewasfound to have aRhythmabnormality due to defect in electrical conduction in the heart. So heunderwentcorrective procedure i.e., Radiofrequency Ablation for increasedheart rate.

This Tricuspid Valve wasstillleakingresulting in HeartFailure and hewas not able to performanyphysicalactivity. He wascomplaining of tiredness, fatigue and swelling of the legs. As thischild has undergone 2 Open HeartSurgeries, performing3rd Open HeartSurgery carries highest risk. Hence the decisionwastaken to replace this valve by Non-Surgicalmethodusing 19mm Tissue Vale called‘’ MyVal‘’. Till nowthisprocedurewas not done on anypatient in thisage group.

Dr. Jayaranganath, Dr. John Joseph and team has successfullyconducted the procedure. According to Dr. C.N.Manjunath, Director, the cost of the valve includingprocedureisRs. 15 Lakhs. Donors have contributedRs. 6.5 Lakhs and the remainingamountwasshared by the Institute and the Company. But itwastotally free for the patient.

Post procedure, patient has shownsignificantimprovement and heisasymptomatic.
